About Kiso Shikki:
Kiso shikki is an attractive and resilient lacquer ware that uses a clay undercoating found in Kiso County, in the mountains of southern Nagano Prefecture Japan.
A thriving industry based in the county produces a range of Kiso wares to this day. Lacquerware from Kiso was originally of two different types, Hirawasa shikki and Fukshima shikki.
These date from Keicho era (1596-1615) and Oei era (1394-1439) respectively, and were of plainly finished shunkei nuri and hananuri styles. At the end of the nineteenth century, however, craftsmen from Wajima introduced the use of clay undercoatings to Kiso.
In place of the jinoko powder used in Wajima, Kiso lacquerers turned to sabitsuchi, a fine clay from the mountains near the village of Narakawa. When combined with lacquer, sabitsuchi forms a tough ground that is easily absorbed by wood. Applied as an undercoat, it provides a sealing and protective layer that guarantees really durable lacquerware.
In general, Kiso shikki is a happy medium that retains the beauty of the wood while making an article more functional through the application of lacquer.
