About Yamanaka Lacquerware(Shikki)
Japan's principal types of lacquerware have wood as their base material, and Yamanaka lacquer is no exception. Yamanaka ware began as uncoated woodcraft, only later did it develop into lacquer ware.
Most Yamanaka shikki (lacquerware) are turned goods to the sujibiki style. There are four main types; sensuji, produced with a two-edged chisel; inahosuji, a series of lozenge shapes produced with a special plane; tobisuji, a series of nicks also shaped by a plane; and hirasuji, a line of projecting or receding waveforms.
Using various combinations of colored lacquers and undercoats accentuates the effects of turning. Common lacquering techniques include mokumi tamenuri, which enhances a wood's grain, and the colored applications kuro nuri, shu nuri, and bengara tamenuri.
Woods that are suitable for turning are favored: zelkova, pine, birch, and Japanese horse chestnut.
Some makie is used for Yamanaka shikki. Yet in general most of the lacquer ware is simple in its feeling and enhances the natural beauty of the woods used.
