About URUSHI art:
Urushi art is unique to Japan and Japanese urushi art is especially rich in terms both of variety and sophistication of technique. Urushi has been used for tableware, furniture, painting, jewelry and other many objects for more than hundred years. Among Japanese urushi ware, Yamanaka lacquerware is characterized by using rokurobiki, wheel wood carving skills, placing a block of keyaki (the Japanese zelkova, a precious tree with a beautiful hard grain of wood) vertical on a wheel is shaped into a bowl or a cup. Careful and steady manual work produces beautiful and reliable bowl or a cup. Kashoku-biki is a wheel wood curving skills that is very delicate and special technique with various aesthetics and functionality by turners and their topnotch skills leads to highlight the quality of keyaki and the fine shape and the rich urushi finish are the reasons why Yamanaka lacquerware is highly evaluated.
